Selling to a Local
Yes, she knew what she wanted..... after browsing
my little home gallery for 10 minutes.
"I'll have that Yew vessel"
"Well that is some choice", I said. "I just sent some pieces
away for an exhibition but I did not want to see that one go. It
took 15 years of turning to come across yew, let alone a stump burl."
( The stump actually looked like a rosemary bush. The finished piece
is 230 mm tall by 175 mm wide, with a delightful natural-edge neckline,
and turned very finely. Exquisite! )
I wrapped up the piece while she dug around her purse for cash.
I wondered if I should offer a discount for cash, but she didn't
ask and as I pondered the question she handed me a $10 bill.
"What is that for lady?"
She pointed to the wrapped up treasure.
"$450 is the price, not $4.50. Hell, these burls are worth about
$60 before I even take the risk of turning them! All you can buy
here for $4.50 is a spinning top" (NOT telling her that the tops
are made by my 14year old son Dev)
I then offered her 10% discount for cash...."No, make it $400" but
off she went.
So, I passed up the opportunity of a life-time. My
treasure could have taken pride of place on her mantelpiece,
along side a Big Mac & Small Coke.
