Guidelines for Article Submission

Woodturns.com is an online community for woodturners and woodworkers. It was created with the idea that there isn't enough information out there for woodturners. Our goal is to bring you current and relevant woodturning information. Because of the vast amount of knowledge held by woodturners world wide, the articles on our site will be primarily written by woodturners like you. We want to reflect what is happening in the world of woodturning.

We do not pay for articles published on Woodturns.com. What you will be doing is sharing your knowledge with other woodturners. You will be helping to promote the Art of Woodturning.

Any topic related to woodturning is welcomed. Topics could be: woodturning techniques, finishing techniques, product and tool reviews, artist profiles, club profiles, product plans, or any other topic related to turning such as sanding, carving, or material information. We also like to hear what is happening in the world of woodturning. If you know of any special event, or you just recently attended a woodturning event, we would like to publish that information. We also have a Tips & Techniques area of our website. If you have a tip that you would like to share, let us know. See Tips & Techniques for more information.

Writing Articles: If you have an idea for an article for Woodturns.com please send us a brief description of what you want to write about. This isn't a formal application, just give some basic ideas that you have. Think of it as a rough draft. We are open to just about any topic, so chances are we'll like your idea. Click here for how to contact our editor. When contacting us, please include an e-mail address if you have one. E-mail is our preferable way of contacting you, and we encourage you to use our e-mail address for contacting us.

The length of the article doesn't have to be extremely long. Just make sure that the article is informative and clear. Readers like articles that are short and concise and are easy to understand. About a page or two is good, but if you feel that you need to write more, by all means do so.

Once we have reviewed your proposal, we'll contact you about publishing your article on our website. If we're not going to use your submission we'll let you know of that too. We'll let you know of any additional work, if any that will be needed from you. We highly encourage you to include pictures with your article. A picture is worth a thousand words, and they could help to further explain what you are writing about. See Photos for more information. Back to top

Tips & Techniques: This area of our website is similar to other Tips and Technique sections that you've seen in other magazines. It is here that we want to share solutions and ideas you have for common problems that woodturners face. Submissions for Tips & Techniques should be brief, about one to two paragraphs at the most. If you want to include a picture with your tip, that would also be helpful. Back to top

Photos: Pictures that illustrate techniques, events, and other topics, or show a finished turning are essential. We highly recommend including pictures along with your articles. You can even include pictures with Tips & Techniques. Just remember when taking your pictures that you don't include any safety hazards, or anything that could lead a reader to doing something harmful, i.e. not using goggles or a face shield, not using a face mask, having loose clothing in the way, ect... Color pictures are preferred, although we will accept black and white pictures. We also accept pictures of woodturners, or of woodturnings that don't accompany an article. See the next section for how to submit your article or picture. If you'd like to send us pictures of an event, or of someone's work please include a brief description of what, or who the picture is of. Back to top

Article and Picture Submission Format: Articles and pictures can either be sent by regular mail, or by e-mail. If you're sending pictures through the mail, please send them as standard 3 x 5 (inches) format. We cannot process slides at this time. Any e-mail photos should be sent in jpeg or gif format. Because picture files tend to be large, please send them as separate attachments to the e-mail. If you're sending a lot of pictures via e-mail, you may have to send a couple e-mail's with the pictures as attachments.

Articles sent by e-mail should either be sent in text (txt) format, or MS Word format. If you're mailing an article it can either be hand written, typed, or on a computer disk. It is preferred that you send articles as typed because it eliminates having to retype everything, and some handwritings can be hard to read.

Please be sure that you include your contact information with the article or pictures that you send. Back to top
